Life story
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was born on 9 March 1934. He grew up during a difficult era in the Soviet Union and found his calling in aviation, training as a pilot before being selected for the Soviet space programme.
On 12 April 1961, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kazakh SSR aboard Vostok 1, Gagarin became the first person to journey into outer space. He completed a single orbit of the Earth in a flight lasting 108 minutes, opening a new chapter in human history.
The achievement made him an international celebrity and a lasting symbol of the Space Race. He received his country's highest distinction, Hero of the Soviet Union, along with numerous other accolades, and his name became known across the world.
Yuri Gagarin died on 27 March 1968 near Novosyolovo. He was laid to rest in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Moscow. His single orbit of the Earth remains one of the defining moments of the twentieth century.
