Life story
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, the town that would remain bound to his name across the centuries. From these English roots would grow a body of work unmatched in the language he shaped.
A playwright, poet and actor, Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. Often called England's national poet and the Bard of Avon, he gave voice to the full range of human experience, from the comic to the tragic.
His surviving works, including collaborations, comprise some thirty-nine plays, one hundred and fifty-four sonnets, three long narrative poems and a few further verses. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright, carrying his words to audiences he could never have imagined.
William Shakespeare died on 23 April 1616 and was buried in Holy Trinity Church in his native Stratford-upon-Avon. He remains arguably the most influential writer in the English language, his works still studied, still staged and still reinterpreted by each generation that comes to them.
