Life story
Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in the Netherlands. Dutch by birth, he would become one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art, though recognition came largely after his life had ended.
In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the final two years of his life. His landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits poured forth in a remarkable flood of creation.
His work is characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork, qualities that helped lay the foundations of modern art. Through hardship he continued to paint, giving form to a vision uniquely his own.
He died on 29 July 1890 at Auvers-sur-Oise, his death at the age of thirty-seven following years of mental illness and poverty. He rests in the communal cemetery there, and his art is now treasured across the world.
