Life story
Victor-Marie Hugo was born on 26 February 1802 in France, into a century of upheaval and hope that would run through the whole of his long life. He would become one of the defining voices of his nation and his age.
A French Romantic author, Hugo wrote as poet, essayist and playwright, and worked also as a journalist. His pen ranged widely, giving shape to the passions, sorrows and aspirations that marked the Romantic spirit and speaking to readers far beyond the borders of France.
Hugo was more than a man of letters. As a human rights activist and politician he devoted his energies to the causes of justice and human dignity, lending his voice to the vulnerable and the oppressed and standing among the public figures of his time.
Victor Hugo died on 22 May 1885 in Paris and was laid to rest in the Panthéon, honoured by the nation he had served in word and in deed. His memory endures as that of a writer whose art and conscience were never separate.
