Life story
Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in England. From an early age he was drawn to the deep questions of the universe, a curiosity that would shape a remarkable life in science.
He became a theoretical astrophysicist and cosmologist, serving as director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. Between 1979 and 2009 he held the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics at Cambridge, widely viewed as one of the most prestigious academic posts in the world.
Hawking devoted his career to understanding the cosmos and to sharing that understanding with others. His work reached far beyond the university, and he became one of the most recognised scientific figures of his time, admired for both his intellect and his perseverance.
Stephen Hawking died on 14 March 2018 in Cambridge. He was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey, among Britain's greatest scientists. His legacy endures in the questions he asked and in the many minds he encouraged to look upward.
