Life story
Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar was born on 24 July 1783 in Venezuela. Born into a land held under the Spanish Empire, he came to embody the aspiration of a continent for self-determination.
Bolívar became a military officer and statesman. He led the campaigns that brought independence to the territories that are now Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela, freeing them from Spanish rule.
For his role in liberating so many nations he became known colloquially as El Libertador, the Liberator of America. His vision extended beyond the battlefield to the shape of the new republics he helped to found.
Simón Bolívar died on 17 December 1830 at the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino. He was laid to rest at the Cathedral of Santa Marta, and he remains honoured across South America as a founding figure of its independent nations.
