Life story
Sigmund Freud was born on 6 May 1856. An Austrian neurologist, he would become the founder of psychoanalysis and one of the most influential thinkers of the modern age, reshaping the way humanity understands the mind.
Psychoanalysis, the discipline he established, is a clinical method for evaluating and treating pathologies that arise from conflicts within the psyche, pursued through dialogue between patient and psychoanalyst.
From this method he derived a distinctive theory of the mind and of human agency, one that placed the hidden currents of the inner life at the centre of understanding. His ideas spread far beyond medicine into culture and thought.
He died on 23 September 1939 in London, where he had sought refuge in his final year. His work continues to shape psychology, philosophy and the arts, and his remains are held at the Golders Green Crematorium.
