Life story
Ray Charles Robinson was born on 23 September 1930 in the United States. He lost his vision as a child, possibly due to glaucoma, and thereafter wore the dark glasses that would become part of his enduring image. From these early beginnings he began the long journey that would carry him far beyond the circumstances of his childhood.
Charles became an American singer, songwriter, and pianist, and grew into one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. Contemporaries often referred to him as The Genius, a name that spoke to the depth of his gift and the reach of his artistry across the decades.
Among friends and fellow musicians, he preferred to be called Brother Ray, a name that reflected the warmth and camaraderie he carried into his music and his relationships. His work touched countless listeners and left a lasting mark on the sound of his era.
Ray Charles died on 10 June 2004 in Beverly Hills. He rests at Inglewood Park Cemetery, remembered as an artist whose voice and vision reshaped popular music and whose influence continues to be felt by musicians and audiences alike.
