Life story
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born on 7 October 1885 in Copenhagen. He grew up in a Danish household that valued reason and reflection, and from his earliest years he showed the steady, searching mind that would later reshape the study of the atom.
He became a Danish theoretical physicist who made foundational contributions to the understanding of atomic structure and quantum theory. His work opened a new view of how atoms are built and how they behave, and in 1922 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in recognition of that achievement.
Bohr was more than a physicist. He was also a philosopher and a devoted promoter of scientific research, gathering colleagues and young thinkers around him and encouraging the free exchange of ideas. His influence shaped not only theories but the community of science itself.
Niels Bohr died in Copenhagen on 18 November 1962 and was laid to rest in the city's Assistens Cemetery. His name endures at the heart of quantum physics, and the spirit of open inquiry he championed continues to guide those who follow.
