Life story
Neil Alden Armstrong was born on 5 August 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio. An aeronautical engineer by training, he brought to everything he did a quiet precision and a steady temperament.
Before he reached for the stars he served his country as a naval aviator and worked as a test pilot, tasks that demanded both nerve and exacting skill. These years prepared him for the extraordinary undertaking that lay ahead.
As commander of the 1969 Apollo 11 mission he became the first person to walk on the Moon, a moment shared by people across the world. In later years he turned to teaching, serving as a university professor and passing his knowledge to a new generation.
Neil Armstrong died on 25 August 2012 in Cincinnati. In keeping with his wishes he was buried at sea in the Atlantic Ocean. He is remembered for a single step that carried the hopes of humanity beyond the Earth.
