Life story
Napoleon Bonaparte was born on 15 August 1769 on the island of Corsica. He rose to prominence as a general during the French Revolution, a time of upheaval that opened the way for men of ability and ambition.
Later known by his regnal name Napoleon I, he became Emperor of the French from 18 May 1804 until his first abdication in 1814, with a brief restoration during the Hundred Days in 1815. He led a series of military campaigns across Europe and the Middle East during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
He was more than a commander in the field. As a statesman he carried out numerous legal and administrative reforms in France and across Europe, and much of that work outlasted the wars that made his name.
Napoleon died on 5 May 1821 at Longwood House during his exile on Saint Helena. His remains were later returned to Paris, where he rests at Les Invalides. His life is remembered as one that left a lasting mark upon the history of a continent.
