The Greatest, remembered in the ring and beyond it."

Life story

Muhammad Ali was born on 17 January 1942 in the United States. From his earliest years he showed the determination that would carry him to the summit of his sport and into the wider life of his nation.

Ali became an American professional boxer and activist, a global cultural icon widely known by the nickname the Greatest. He is often regarded as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, holding the Ring magazine heavyweight title from 1964 to 1970, standing as undisputed champion from 1974 to 1978, and reigning as WBA and Ring heavyweight champion from 1978 to 1979.

Beyond the ring, he became a figure of conviction and influence whose voice reached far beyond sport. In 1999 he was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC, honours that reflected the breadth of his impact.

Muhammad Ali died on 3 June 2016 in Scottsdale. He rests in Louisville, remembered as a champion whose courage, artistry, and principle made him one of the defining figures of his age.
