Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love."

Life story

Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, known to the world as Mother Teresa, was born on 26 August 1910. Of Albanian heritage, she would in time make India her home and the poor of Kolkata her family.

She became a Catholic nun and devoted her life to service. In answer to what she understood as a calling, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, an order dedicated to caring for the sick, the dying, and the destitute.

Through years of quiet and steadfast work, she gave herself to those whom others overlooked. Her example drew admiration far beyond the Catholic Church, and she came to be recognised as Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Mother Teresa died on 5 September 1997 in Kolkata, where she rests at the Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity. She is remembered as a Catholic saint whose life bore witness to compassion offered without condition.
