Milan Lasica

Things are never so bad that they couldn't get worse."

Life story

Milan Lasica was born on 3 February 1940 in Zvolen. He studied dramaturgy and, while still a student, struck up his legendary partnership with Július Satinský. The duo Lasica – Satinský became a byword — the very embodiment of intelligent, gentle and timeless humour.

Their dialogues, sketches and plays entertained and delighted whole generations, while smuggling wisdom and a quiet defiance of the times between the lines. Lasica was a master of the word, of absurd wit and of a dry, elegant smile.

He was an actor, writer, lyricist, director and singer. For years he led the Bratislava-based Štúdio L+S, appeared in films and on stage, and wrote song lyrics. His manner — refined, ironic, deeply human — had no equal in Slovakia.

He died on 18 July 2021 in Bratislava, quite literally on the stage to which he had devoted his life. He is buried in the city that became his home. He remained a symbol of cultivated humour that never gave offence, yet always gave one pause for thought.
