Life story
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born on 29 September 1547 in Spain. His life would carry him through many trials and travels, yet it is as a writer that he is remembered, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language.
He came to be counted among the world's pre-eminent novelists. His gifts of imagination and observation, drawn from a life of wide experience, gave him a voice that reached far beyond his own age and continues to speak to readers across the world.
He is best known for his two-part novel Don Quixote, a work considered to be the first modern novel. Don Quixote has been labelled by many well-known authors as the best book of all time and the best and most central work in world literature.
Miguel de Cervantes died in Madrid on 22 April 1616 and was laid to rest at the convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians. His masterpiece endures as a foundation of the modern novel, and his name stands among the greatest in world literature.
