Michael Joseph Jackson was born on 29 August 1958 in the United States. Music was part of his life from his earliest years, and he grew into one of the most influential performers of his time.
A singer, songwriter, dancer and philanthropist, he became known as the King of Pop and is widely regarded as one of the most culturally significant figures of the twentieth century. His musical achievements broke American racial barriers and made him a dominant figure worldwide.
Through his songs, music videos, concerts and fashion, he transformed visual performance in popular music, popularising street dance moves such as the moonwalk, the robot and the anti-gravity lean. He is often described as one of the greatest entertainers of all time.
Michael Jackson died on 25 June 2009 in Los Angeles and was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. His influence on music and performance continues to be felt across the world.
