Life story

Maya Angelou was born on the fourth of April, 1928. She would become an American memoirist, essayist, poet, and civil rights activist, a voice of remarkable range and endurance.

Over a career spanning more than fifty years, she published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows.

Her work drew wide honor. She received dozens of awards and more than fifty honorary degrees. Her series of seven autobiographies focused on her childhood and early adult experiences, tracing a life with candor and grace.

The first of them, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1969, tells of her life up to the age of seventeen and brought her international recognition and acclaim. She died on the twenty-eighth of May, 2014, in Winston-Salem, and her words continue to reach readers across the world.
