The time is always right to do what is right."

Life story

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on 15 January 1929 in the United States. He was raised within the Baptist tradition, and the faith of his upbringing would remain central to the calling he later followed as a minister and a leader.

King became a Baptist minister and a prominent leader of the civil rights movement from 1955 onward. He advanced civil rights for people of color through nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience, standing against Jim Crow laws and other forms of legalized discrimination.

Through patient and principled struggle, he gave voice to the hope that people might be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. His leadership drew countless others into the peaceful pursuit of justice.

King's life ended in his assassination on 4 April 1968. He is remembered at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park in Atlanta, and his witness to nonviolence continues to guide movements for equality throughout the world.
