Monroe was an American actress and model, known for playing comic blonde bombshell characters. She became one of the most popular figures of the 1950s and early 1960s, as well as an emblem of the era's changing culture.
For a decade she was a top-billed actress whose films drew audiences across the world. By the time of her death in 1962, those films had grossed some two hundred million dollars, a measure of the reach and popularity she achieved in her lifetime.
Marilyn Monroe died on 4 August 1962 in Brentwood. She rests at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery, remembered as a luminous presence whose image remains among the most enduring of the twentieth century.
