Life story
Marián Varga was born on 29 January 1947 in Skalica. He studied organ and piano and became the most original Slovak musician of his generation — a man who merged classical music with rock into something entirely new.
In 1969 he founded the group Collegium Musicum, with which he brought the fusion of classical music and rock to the concert stage. His virtuoso playing of the organ and keyboards, full of imagination and depth, had no equal on the domestic scene.
He arranged the works of the classical masters, composed his own music and collaborated with leading singers and bands. He was a musical loner and seeker who never settled for the simple solution and kept experimenting.
He died on 9 August 2017 in Bratislava. He left behind recordings that rank among the treasures of Slovak music. He remained a symbol of artistic freedom — a musician who refused to be pigeonholed and always played from within.
