Learning never exhausts the mind."

Life story

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was born on 15 April 1452 in Italy. A polymath of the High Renaissance, he came into a world on the threshold of great change, and few would do more to shape that age than he.

He was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor and architect. Though his fame first rested on his achievements as a painter, his gifts extended into nearly every field of human inquiry.

His notebooks reveal the restless breadth of his mind, filled with drawings and notes on anatomy, astronomy, botany, cartography, painting and palaeontology. He is widely regarded as a genius who epitomised the Renaissance humanist ideal.

He died on 2 May 1519 at the Clos Lucé in France, where he had spent his final years. His collective works advanced European art to an extent rivalled only by that of Michelangelo, and he rests at the Château d'Amboise.
