Life story

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, known in English as Leo Tolstoy, was born on 28 August 1828 in Russia. Into a land of vast landscapes and deep questions he was born, and to their exploration he would devote his gifts.

Tolstoy was a Russian writer whose art reached into the lives of individuals and the movements of whole societies. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential authors of all time, a reputation earned through a body of work of rare scope and moral seriousness.

Across a long life he wrote with an unwavering attention to the human soul and to the questions of how one ought to live. His name became bound not only to literature but to a lasting inquiry into conscience, faith and the meaning of a good life.

Leo Tolstoy died on 7 November 1910 in Astapovo and was buried at Yasnaya Polyana, the family estate that had shaped so much of his life and thought. His works endure as an enduring inheritance for readers who seek in literature both beauty and truth.
