Life story

John Winston Ono Lennon was born on 9 October 1940 in England. Music entered his life early, and it would carry him from his home city to audiences around the world.

A musician, songwriter and activist, Lennon gained global fame as the founder, co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles. His songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney remains the most successful in history.

Beyond his work with the band, he became known for his voice as an artist and as an advocate, using his standing to speak on the causes he believed in. His songs became part of the shared culture of his generation.

John Lennon died on 8 December 1980 in New York City. He is remembered near Central Park, close to the city he had made his home, and his music continues to be heard around the world.
