Johann Sebastian Bach

St. Thomas Church, Leipzig

The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God."

Life story

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on 21 March 1685 in Germany, into the late Baroque age. His life began within a world of church music and craft, and from these roots grew one of the most enduring musical voices in the history of Western culture.

He was a German composer and musician known for his prolific output across a great variety of instruments and forms. His works ranged from the orchestral Brandenburg Concertos to solo instrumental music such as the Cello Suites and the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, and to keyboard masterpieces including the Goldberg Variations and The Well-Tempered Clavier.

His organ works, such as the Schübler Chorales and the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, and his choral works, including the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor, revealed his mastery of counterpoint. That command of interwoven voices is heard clearly in The Musical Offering and The Art of Fugue.

Bach died in Leipzig on 28 July 1750 and was laid to rest at St. Thomas Church. Felix Mendelssohn precipitated the Bach Revival with a performance of the St. Matthew Passion in 1829, and ever since Bach has been acclaimed as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
