Life story
Jane Austen was born on the sixteenth of December, 1775, in England. She would become one of the most cherished writers her country has produced, a keen and quiet observer of the world around her.
She is known primarily for her six novels, works that implicitly interpret, critique, and comment on the English landed gentry at the close of the eighteenth century.
Her novels found their lasting power not in grand events but in the careful observation of ordinary life, its manners, its hopes, and its constraints. Her clear eye and gentle wit have kept her stories alive for generations of readers.
She died on the eighteenth of July, 1817, in Winchester, and was laid to rest within Winchester Cathedral. Her memory remains a steady presence in English letters.
