Life story
George Washington was born on 22 February 1732 in the Colony of Virginia. A Founding Father of the United States, he came to embody the steadiness and resolve that a fragile new republic would require of its leaders.
As commander of the Continental Army, Washington led the Patriot forces through the long American Revolutionary War against the British Empire. Through hardship and uncertain fortune he held his army together and carried it, at last, to victory and to independence.
He then became the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. In accepting and later relinquishing that office he set an example of restraint that shaped the young nation for generations. For his part in bringing about American independence he is remembered as the Father of His Country.
George Washington died on 14 December 1799 at Mount Vernon, his Virginia home, where he rests still. His memory endures as the founder who chose to serve rather than to rule.
