Genghis Khan

* 31 May 1162 25 August 1227
Burial place unknown

Founder of an empire that reached across a continent."

Life story

Genghis Khan, also known as Chinggis Khan, was born, according to traditional accounts, around 1162 on the steppes of Mongolia. His early life unfolded among the scattered and often divided tribes of that vast land.

He spent most of his life uniting the Mongol tribes, drawing together peoples long set against one another. From that hard-won unity he forged a single nation and was proclaimed its first khan, founding the Mongol Empire.

Once his people were joined, he launched a series of military campaigns that carried Mongol power far beyond the steppe, conquering large parts of China and Central Asia. Under his leadership the empire grew to a scale the world had not seen before.

Genghis Khan died on 25 August 1227 near Yinchuan during his final campaign. In keeping with Mongol custom his burial place was never marked and remains unknown to this day. He is remembered as the founder of one of the largest empires in history.
