Life story
Galileo Galilei was born on 15 February 1564 in Pisa, then part of the Duchy of Florence. From this Italian city he would rise to become an astronomer, physicist, engineer and polymath whose curiosity knew few bounds.
Galileo devoted his life to observing the natural world and measuring what others merely supposed. His work spanned the study of motion, the mechanics of the physical world and the distant lights of the night sky, each pursuit marked by a determination to see clearly and to reason from what he saw.
He has been called the father of observational astronomy, of classical physics and of the scientific method, and indeed of modern science itself. In an age that often preferred inherited certainty, Galileo held to observation and demonstration, and in doing so he changed the course of human understanding.
Galileo died on 8 January 1642 in Arcetri and was in time laid to rest in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, among the honoured figures of his land. His example endures as a testament to the patient courage of one who trusts the evidence of his own eyes.
