Life story
Eugen Suchoň was born on 25 September 1908 in Pezinok. He showed musical talent early and studied composition in Bratislava and Prague. He became a founding figure of modern Slovak music — a composer who gave it a world dimension.
His opera Krútňava became the first great Slovak national opera and won fame on foreign stages as well. In it he combined folk melody with modern harmony and created a work such as Slovak music had never known before.
He also composed a second opera, Svätopluk, symphonic and piano works, and the cycle Obrázky zo Slovenska. Alongside composing, he taught whole generations of musicians and wrote on music theory.
He died on 5 August 1993 in Bratislava. His music still resounds in concert halls and opera houses to this day. He remained a composer who proved that even a small nation can have great, world-class music.
