Erwin Rudolf Josef Alexander Schrödinger was born on 12 August 1887 in Vienna, into the intellectual and scientific life of the Austrian capital. His early years unfolded amid the culture and curiosity of a city that prized learning, and it was there that his lifelong devotion to theoretical inquiry took root.
He became an Austrian theoretical physicist who developed fundamental results in quantum theory. He is remembered above all for devising the Schrödinger equation, which provides a way to calculate the wave function of a system and describes how that system changes dynamically in time. The equation remains one of the cornerstones of modern physics.
His insight reached beyond a single formula. In 1935 he coined the term quantum entanglement, giving a name to one of the most profound and enduring puzzles of the physical world. In 1933 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Paul Dirac, honoured for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory.
Erwin Schrödinger died in Vienna on 4 January 1961. He was laid to rest in Alpbach, in the Tyrolean mountains he loved. His equation still guides those who seek to understand the nature of matter, and his name endures wherever the quantum world is studied and taught.
