Life story
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on 21 July 1899 in the United States. He would become one of the defining voices of twentieth-century literature, his name known to readers across the world.
Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist, known for an economical, understated style that influenced later twentieth-century writers. He has been romanticised for his adventurous lifestyle and his outspoken, blunt public image, which became inseparable from his work.
Among his seven novels, six short-story collections, and two works of non-fiction, several have become classics of American literature. In 1954 his achievement was recognised with the Nobel Prize in Literature, a crowning honour for a body of work that reshaped modern prose.
Ernest Hemingway died on 2 July 1961 in Ketchum. He rests at Ketchum Cemetery, remembered as a writer whose spare and powerful style left a lasting mark on the literature of his century.
