Life story
Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born on the tenth of December, 1830, in Amherst. She would become one of the most singular voices in American poetry, though the world would not know it in her lifetime.
Largely unpublished and unknown while she lived, she wrote steadily and privately. Her work is now widely regarded as canonical, a body of poetry that speaks with a voice unlike any other.
The Poetry Foundation describes her as having created in her writing a distinctively elliptical language for expressing what was possible but not yet realized. Her poems reach toward the unspoken with a precision all their own.
She died on the fifteenth of May, 1886, in Amherst, and was buried at Amherst West Cemetery. Only after her death did the full measure of her gift become known to the world.
