Life story
Ella Jane Fitzgerald was born on 25 April 1917 in the United States. From an early age she moved toward the music that would define her life, beginning a path that would lead her to the very heights of American song.
She became an American jazz vocalist, songwriter, and composer, celebrated across her career as the First Lady of Song, the Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. These names honoured both her artistry and the affection with which audiences held her.
Fitzgerald was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, timing, and intonation. Her horn-like improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing, set her apart and made her one of the most admired vocalists of her time.
Ella Fitzgerald died on 15 June 1996 in Beverly Hills. She rests at Inglewood Park Cemetery, remembered for a voice of rare beauty and for the grace she brought to jazz and to the songs she made her own.
