A navigator who set his course across an unknown sea."

Life story

Christopher Columbus was born around 1450 in the Republic of Genoa. An Italian explorer and navigator, he came of age in a seafaring world and gave his life to the study and practice of ocean voyaging.

In the name of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain he completed four transatlantic voyages, setting out repeatedly across waters that few had dared to cross. His persistence opened the way for the widespread European exploration that would follow.

His expeditions brought the first known European contact with the Caribbean and with Central and South America. Though the consequences of that meeting of worlds were profound and lasting, his voyages marked a turning point in the history of exploration.

Christopher Columbus died on 19 May 1506 in Valladolid. He rests at Seville Cathedral. He is remembered as a navigator whose journeys reshaped the map of the known world.
