Life story
Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, known as Che, was born on 14 June 1928 in Argentina. The experiences of his early travels across the continent shaped the political convictions that would guide the rest of his life.
Guevara became a Marxist revolutionary, author, and military theorist. He was a major figure of the Cuban Revolution, and he served in turn as a guerrilla leader, diplomat, and politician.
A writer as well as a revolutionary, he set down his ideas on politics and warfare, and his image came to circulate far beyond the movements he joined. His stylized visage became a countercultural symbol recognised around the world.
Che Guevara died on 9 October 1967 at La Higuera, Bolivia. His remains were later interred at the Che Guevara Mausoleum in Santa Clara, Cuba, and his name endures as one of the most recognised figures of the twentieth century.
