Life story
Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. was born on 16 April 1889 in England. His childhood in the Victorian era was marked by hardship, and from those early years he drew the deep humanity that would later shine through his art.
An English comic actor, filmmaker, singer, film editor and composer, Chaplin rose to fame in the era of silent film. He became a worldwide icon through his screen persona, the Tramp, and is considered one of the film industry's most important figures.
His career spanned more than 75 years, reaching from his childhood until the year before his death. Across that long life he shaped the language of cinema and brought laughter and tenderness to audiences across the globe.
Charlie Chaplin died on 25 December 1977 in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland, where he was laid to rest. His films remain beloved, and the Tramp endures as one of the most recognisable figures in the history of the screen.
