A master whose art and philosophy reached across the world."

Life story

Bruce Lee was born on 27 November 1940. A Hong Kong and American martial artist, actor, and filmmaker, he would become one of the most recognised and admired figures in the history of martial arts and cinema.

Lee was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts philosophy drawn from his experiences in unarmed fighting and self-defense, as well as eclectic, Zen Buddhist, and Taoist thought. It stood as a new school of martial arts thinking that reflected his restless and inquiring mind.

With a career spanning Hong Kong and the United States, Lee is regarded as the first global Chinese film star and one of the most influential martial artists in the history of cinema. Known for the five feature-length martial arts films he starred in as an adult, he is credited with helping to popularise martial arts films in the 1970s and promoting Hong Kong action cinema.

Bruce Lee died on 20 July 1973 in Kowloon Tong. He rests at Lake View Cemetery, remembered as an artist and philosopher whose vision continues to inspire practitioners and audiences around the world.
