Life story

Robert Nesta Marley was born on 6 February 1945 in Jamaica. From his homeland he would carry a distinctive musical voice to listeners across the world.

A reggae singer, songwriter and guitarist, Marley is considered one of the pioneers of the genre and was renowned for his distinctive vocal and songwriting style. He greatly increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide and became a global figure in popular culture.

Known as a Rastafarian icon, he infused his music with a sense of spirituality and became a symbol of Jamaican music, culture and identity. He was outspoken in his support for democratic social reforms and advocated for pan-Africanism.

Bob Marley died on 11 May 1981 and was laid to rest at Nine Mile in Saint Ann, Jamaica, near the place of his birth. His music endures as a lasting voice of hope and unity.
