Life story
Benjamin Franklin was born on 17 January 1706 in colonial Boston. From modest beginnings he grew into a polymath whose interests ranged across writing, science, industry and public life, embodying the practical spirit of a young country still taking shape.
Franklin became one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was a drafter and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, lending his judgement and his pen to the document that announced a new nation to the world.
He also gave shape to the everyday institutions of that nation, serving as its first postmaster general. In this and in countless other undertakings he showed a lasting concern for the common good and for the quiet machinery that binds a people together.
Benjamin Franklin died on 17 April 1790 in Philadelphia, the city he had long made his home. He rests at Christ Church Burial Ground. He is remembered as a founder, a thinker and a citizen whose usefulness outlived his years.
