Life story
Antoni Gaudí i Cornet was born on 25 June 1852, a Catalan whose imagination would leave its mark upon the very face of his homeland. From his earliest years he was drawn to form, structure and the quiet lessons of the natural world.
As an architect and designer, Gaudí became widely known as the greatest exponent of Catalan Modernisme. His works possess a style entirely their own, a sui generis vision in which stone and light seem to grow rather than to be built, unlike the work of any who came before or after him.
Most of his creations rise in Barcelona, the city he made his own, and among them stands his magnum opus, the Sagrada Familia church. Into it he poured the fullness of his devotion and his art, labouring toward a vision that reached beyond the span of a single life.
Antoni Gaudí died on 10 June 1926 in Barcelona and was laid to rest within the Sagrada Familia itself, at the heart of his greatest work. His legacy endures in the streets of Barcelona and in the wonder of all who stand before what he made.
