Anne Frank

Bergen-Belsen, Germany

In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."

Life story

Annelies Marie Frank was born on 12 June 1929 in Germany. Born into a Jewish family, she spent part of her childhood in the ordinary world of school and friendships before that world was overtaken by persecution.

During the German occupation of the Netherlands, Anne and her family went into hiding in a secret annex in Amsterdam, where they lived from 1942. Throughout those years she kept a diary, recording her family's everyday life with remarkable honesty and insight.

In 1944 the family was discovered and arrested, and Anne was taken from the annex that had sheltered her. The diary she left behind survived, preserving her voice and the small details of a life lived under constant threat.

Anne Frank died in early 1945 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, a victim of the Holocaust. Her diary later brought her worldwide recognition, and through its pages she remains one of the most enduring witnesses to the human cost of that time.
