Life story
Amelia Mary Earhart was born on 24 July 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. From an early age she showed the independence of spirit that would one day carry her into the sky.
She became an American aviator and aviation pioneer at a time when flight was still young and its risks were great. Through courage and determination she made herself one of the most celebrated figures of early flight, and an inspiration to many who followed.
Her record-setting flights across the Atlantic and the Pacific won admiration around the world. In 1937, during an ambitious attempt to fly around the globe, her aircraft disappeared over the Pacific Ocean near Howland Island, and she was lost.
Amelia Earhart was officially declared dead on 5 January 1939. No grave marks her rest, for she was lost over the sea she loved to cross. She is remembered as a pioneer whose daring gave shape to the age of flight.
