Life story
Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born on 21 October 1833 in Sweden, into a family and an age keenly engaged with science and industry. From these beginnings he would grow into one of the most inventive minds of his century.
A chemist, inventor, engineer and businessman, Nobel worked on a great many contributions to science and held three hundred and fifty-five patents during his life. He is best known for inventing dynamite, a discovery that transformed engineering and industry across the world.
Yet Nobel is remembered as much for his final wishes as for his inventions. He bequeathed his fortune to establish the Nobel Prizes, choosing to honour those whose work brings the greatest benefit to humankind, and so turning the fruits of his labour toward the encouragement of others.
Alfred Nobel died on 10 December 1896 in Sanremo and was buried at the Norra begravningsplatsen in Stockholm. Each year his name is spoken anew in the prizes that bear it, a quiet and lasting testament to a life devoted to discovery and to the good of others.
