Life story
Albert Einstein was born on 14 March 1879 in Germany, into a world that his mind would come to reshape. From early life he carried a restless wonder about the workings of nature, a wonder that would define the whole of his years.
As a theoretical physicist he is best known for developing the theory of relativity, which transformed the understanding of space, time and gravity. His mass–energy equivalence formula, E = mc², arising from special relativity, has been called the world's most famous equation.
His contributions reached also into quantum theory, deepening the science of the very small. In 1921 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his services to theoretical physics and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.
He died on 18 April 1955 in Princeton, where he had settled in his later years. His name has become a byword for genius, and his work remains a foundation of modern physics, a lasting testament to the power of human thought.
